How thick was prairie topsoil when it was first plowed? How thick is the topsoil in the midwest now?


Replies:
According to a Illinois Agricultural publication I read some years ago, in Illinois, 1830's the topsoil was about 24 inches deep. In 1983 the average was 6 inches in depth. Ask your own state's Department of Agriculture for their information.
