While gathering down wood for a campfire marshmellow stick
last weekend in the Smokies... I found a branch that when peeled of its
bark remained a vibrant orange. I couldn't find a tree that resembled my
branch and I tried to find some reference to orange "bark" on the
internet but to no avail. Can you identify this particular tree or
shrub?

are several woody plants with orange inner bark:
